Set the stop before the start
Decide where the evening ends while it is still ahead of you, not halfway through it. Here is how to do that on Morvanthe, and why it works.
Why a limit set in advance holds
In the middle of a session it is hard to judge time. Rounds are short, results arrive quickly and there is always one more. A decision made beforehand does not have to compete with that pull: you have already made it. Psychologists call this a precommitment, and it is one of the most reliable tools there is for keeping any habit in proportion.
Four ways to set the stop here
- A plan for the evening. On the home page, choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. A time check appears at that point with your minutes, rounds and facet totals.
- A round limit. On Play Well, cap a session at 25, 75 or 150 rounds. When you reach it, every game stops for that session.
- A facet limit. Also on Play Well: end the session once you are down a chosen number of facets. Facets are free, but a limit like this is good practice for any game of chance.
- A break. Pause, at the top of every page, switches all eight games off on this device for anything from 15 minutes to 14 days; two hours or more cannot be cut short.
When the time check appears
Read the figures, then choose. "Stop for now" starts a 15-minute break and earns the Clear Head sticker, the only sticker we give for not playing. "Keep going" closes the check until the next one. Either is fine; the point is to make a choice rather than drift.
If stopping is hard
If you notice that you keep pressing past the limits you set, here or anywhere else, that is worth taking seriously. GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline, 0808 8020 133, answers free at any hour, and Play Well lists other free UK support.
Facets have no cash value. Playing or success in these games does not imply future success at real-money gambling. More guides
