TypeRacer: our notes

Race other typists through a passage from a book, a film or a song.

Play TypeRacer on its own site

What it is like

TypeRacer turns typing into a short race. A passage appears, a few other players line up beside you and each person’s little car moves along the track as they type. Mistakes have to be fixed before you can carry on, so accuracy matters as much as speed. A race lasts a minute or two.

The passages come from novels, films and songs, which makes the practice surprisingly pleasant, and at the end you see your words per minute and accuracy. It suits a five-minute breather, and a private room with friends turns it into a cheerful contest where the only score is speed.

Your first go

Play as a guest first and aim for clean typing rather than speed; your words per minute will rise on their own once the errors drop. Try a private room with a friend next.

A good place to stop

Each race is short, which makes it easy to keep clicking ‘next race’. Decide on a number, five is plenty, and stop when you reach it.

Before you click

The site carries adverts; yearly plans remove them and add extras. Under-13s can only play through a group set up by a teacher or another adult.
